We can see this season how many injuries one team can have. By the end of this season BYU had at least 5 players with season ending injuries. They had enough bodies, but I can see how having a decent number of backups makes sense.
Basketball has 13-15 roster spots for 5 on the court at a time.
Football has 100 roster spots for 11 on the field at a time (with 25 counting offense, defense, and kickers).
Baseball has 9 on the field at a time and usually a roster of 30.
So having 28 for soccer is actually even smaller for that ratio than some of these other sports.
