Hawaii was always desirable as the point of the spear in the Pacific
I don't think the heavy influx of cash via the military is at all surprising.
1. Not a lot of land
2. Not a lot of arable land
Hawaii has a higher GDP than Wyoming, South Dakota, and North Dakota (individually).
