I don't think it makes the statements any more defensible if he were in the locker room or whether he went straight to the room. They are what they are, and the problem with his statements wasn't whether he accurately traced his path from the field to the interview room, its his pathetic excuses and blaming a conference conspiracy for a loss.
I was incredibly unimpressed with him as a leader hearing what he said. Even if it had been a 100% blown call, your AD should have a greater ability to make thoughtful and cautious statements to the media even in an emotional time.
