This makes the DB commit to the inside route, and then forces him to open up his hips to turn and run. This normally gives the WR an immediate 2-3 step separation from the DB if he is running a Go route, which it looks like JoJo was doing. That would normally be the 1st read if the defense is showing man-coverage in the pre-snap read. If it wasn't for the timing in the game, I would say that Jake should have thrown the ball to JoJo immediately to call more attention to the hold and possibly get it upgraded to a PI call to tack on an extra 5 yards. However given the game situation, not throwing it there and looking to the 2nd or 3rd read makes sense because we absolutely had to have the 1st down and there is no guarantee you'll get the flag.
