At this time of year, that's pretty normal. High altitude winds are stronger as
the jet stream moves south with the onset of winter. It brings colder air so that the moisture from contrails basically "seeds" the atmosphere in a way that causes moisture in the atmosphere to condense more than it does during warmer seasons. This condensation forms into high altitude clouds that spread or grow from the contrails as they get smeared by the winds.

I would need to see pictures to confirm, but that is my guess of what you're seeing.
