Actually being able to afford quality coaches helps a lot
The BYU coaching budget was pathetic relative to the going rate for assistants for a very long time. Kalani was tasked with spinning straw into gold.

Lavell got good coaches who were loyal to him in well before salaries exploded, and they stayed on board for the stability, etc.
Bronco was saddled with the same issue and had some major assistant coaching fails as well.

Kalani lobbied for and was granted higher pay for assistants, and Big 12 coaches inclusion has helped solidify that.

BYU had to be cudgeled and drug into the present by reducing the “privilege to coach at BYU tax” in the form of very low salaries, but it has emerged as much more competitive. The results are evident, and our current staff is likely the best we’ve had since the Lavell hay days and probably our best ever.
