It would be interesting to see the large conferences hold tournaments that
spill into the CFP somehow.

I would hold semifinals the first weekend of December at home fields while the G5 have their CCGs. Then hold the P4 CCGs the week before Christmas at the traditional CCG venues while the G5 and several wild cards play. Then, put the P4 conference champions and wild card winners in the New Year's bowl games.

Based on current rankings and standings:
Dec 6-7 Conference Tournaments
ACC: Pitt @ Miami, SMU @ Clemson
B12: Colorado @ BYU, Kansas State @ Iowa State
B1G: Indiana @ Oregon, Ohio State @ Penn State
SEC: Texas A&M @ Georgia, Tennessee @ Texas
AAC: Navy v. Army
MWC: CSU v. Boise State
Sun Belt: Old Dominion v. Louisiana
MAC: Miami(OH) v. WMU
CUSA: Jacksonville St. v. WKU

Dec 20-21 CFP Play-In
ACC CCG (Charlotte): (5)Miami v. (12)Clemson
B12 CCG (Arlington): (9) BYU v. (11)Iowa State
B1G CCG (Indianapolis): (1)Oregon v. (3)Penn State

Wild Card: (21)Army @ (4)Ohio State
Wild Card: (15)Boise State @ (7)Tennessee
Wild Card: (13)Indiana @ (8)Notre Dame
Wild Card: (12)Clemson @ (10)Texas A&M
