Members of the expedition had never encountered a grizzly before leaving and, during the first winter with the Mandans in SD, they warned the members of the expedition that grizzlies are the most feared animals in existence. They laughed at the warning and then did a complete 180 in their journals later that next summer (after dealing with many grizzlies) and stated that they would be fine if they never encountered a grizzly again.
