I'm a board certified estate planning and probate attorney in TX and NM . . .
In order to avoid probate, most people go with a revocable living trust. I would not try to do it on your own. Save up and pay an attorney around $2,000 or so to do all of the documentation (trust, pourover wills, medical and financial powers of attorney, etc.) correctly and get the trust funded correctly. There are too many ways you can screw it up on your own. Part of the fee is paying for peace of mind that it is done right and it works when you die.

If you ask around to enough friends and professionals where you live for an estate planning attorney, I'm confident that the names of one or two attorneys will pop up. Always good to go with an attorney who someone else has used and can confirm that they had a positive experience.
