The word in question is very common in the football community, especially in the locker room, and isn't treated the same as for the general population. The text to the recruit was accidental, the text was meant for his black fellow coach/buddy who he was joshing with, and the fellow coach didn't have a problem.

I've spent a lot of time in the football community and have been around both of those guys enough times to know their character. I personally find the word abhorrent in any context but I understand that in football culture it gets thrown around by every race and is slang and not meant as a slur.

Here's another nugget. I've been around the BYU program too. That particular word gets thrown around there as well.

Scalley apologized and is exemplary in every other facet of life including his dedication to our shared religion. If his team, fellow coaches, and ecclesastical authorities can forgive, then maybe we should too.
