I'd just encourage him to mix in different exercises and muscle groups.
I don't see any problem exercising 6 days a week. I'd be annoyed if my doc told me to cut the number of days I exercise in half, down to 3. Exercising that much is so important for my mental and physical health.

To me, his problem is not resting specific muscle groups that are injured, not alternating between muscle groups to allow for rest, and not fitting in some active recovery days.
