Like many sports
soccer is incredibly engaging and exciting to watch . . . if you know what you are watching. The formations, the movement. If you are familiar with what they are doing, or trying to do, then it's great.

As a long time soccer player, coach and ref there are a few changes I would make. I would get rid of the running clock. Stop the clock on a dead ball. Make the game shorter if you have to, but eliminate the impetus to waste time. I would also penalize diving. Review after the game if you need and give cards. Give some meaningful penalties.

But if someone really doesn't like soccer, that's OK. There are plenty of sports I don't like. Many great sports, and you don't have to like all of them. For those who really want to get into soccer the best advice I could give is educate yourself. Not just "I played a few years of rec soccer when I was younger," but really try to understand the game. It makes a difference.
