Universal healthcare seems like an easy answer, but I work with folks from other
countries and their experience isn’t great.

One guy in the UK has been waiting three years to get eye surgery. Not certain what the issue is but he would have had the surgery within a couple of months in the US with private insurance.

I also interact with folks in Norway. One colleague had appendicitis. He showed up at the hospital and there were about 200 people in line and he was told his wait could be all day. So he went to a private clinic where he had to pay to be seen. The doctor examined him, determined he had appendicitis and was able to get in him into the public hospital for emergency surgery. Basically the private clinic helped him jump the line at the hospital.

I recently had a painful hernia develop on a Friday morning. I saw the surgeon on Tuesday and had surgery on Friday. One week from hernia appearance to surgery. That definitely does not happen with national health care systems alone.

My friends experience in Norway likely pints to the best solution. National health care that provides a minimum level of health care for everyone and those who choose can supplement with private health care.
