Yes. They're preying mostly on old people who see a text like that and then respond, then get sucked into some sob
story or other scam when the person strikes up a conversation.

And these scammers are really, really successful. They scam millions and millions of dollars from people. Just think, even if just .1% of people they message fall for a scam, how hard is it to spam out 1000 or 10000 text messages? They go for volume and then make bank on the elderly and unfortunate.
