I know people who are hoarders, and they haven't overcome it. It is hard to see.
Basically, the individuals I know were given a 20k home renovation/cleaning, and when they were first told, they cried for joy. Less than 24 hours later, they were extremely mad and saying the only reason why they were getting the help was because people thought they were gross.

The time came, and the place was cleaned up and looked awesome. It wasn't long until it was back to where it was. That was probably two years ago, and the house is worse than it's ever been. It is a mental illness that can be overcome, but they have to first accept/admit that there is a problem, and that is extremely difficult.
