Watch out for the Sequoia... Widespread failures of the new engine

The Sequoia shares a powertrain with the Tundra, and it's been failing at an alarming rate—to the extent that Toyota has recalled all 2022s and most 2023 Tundras (with insiders leaking that the remaining 2023s and all 2024s will also get recalled soon). The "fix" that Toyota is offering for this recall is an entirely new crate engine—that's how bad things are right now.

Not worth considering any vehicle with that engine at present, IMO. The whole point of buying a Toyota is the reliability and associated peace of mind, and you don't get any of that with this engine. And I say that as someone who currently owns a probably-affected-but-not-yet-recalled Tundra.

People think that it's probably an issue with debris from casting working its way loose and catching on main bearing #1 (causing that bearing to fail and the engine to seize). But Toyota allegedly changed their casting process to address this, and engines built after that process-change date are still failing.

Other people think it may be a couple of parts which have since been replaced in Toyota's catalogue (see Car Care Nut's detailed video). Maybe that's true, but those part changes were very recent, so there aren't enough vehicles with enough miles on them to be certain.

Some people mistakenly think that this problem only impacts the non-hybrid engines. That's demonstrably not the case—the i-Force Max powertrain is seeing the same problems, and the fact that Toyota hasn't yet authorized a recall for the same-year hybrid powertrains has those owners really stressed.

I know it's a paradigm shift, but the Sequoia is, right now, probably the least reliable vehicle on your list.
