It seemed the VTech players were just trying to squeeze the ball against any body part-- their own or an opponent's-- to "make a catch." While that effort seemed to work temporarily, the Miami defender was able to pop it free.
I don't think a VTech player ever had complete, singular control of the ball, but I also don't think there was sufficient indisputable video evidence to overturn the call on the field. Seems like a situation where the ultimately right call was made but not in a consistent fashion.
