It’s true, and it’s sad. Of all the things you can buy having space is one of
the most meaningful things you can own. The promise of it drove the exploration and colonization of America. Westward expansion and manifest destiny was all about the promise of having your own 40 acres, as opposed to the tenant properties and packed urban dwellings in Europe. The American Dream post-WWII was a landscaped private backyard for 2.5 kids and a bbq grill.

There has always been something very American and internally motivating about the promise of owning your own land. I worry that it will change America somehow if it’s no longer an option.
