It does not affect the brand one bit. If anything, the brand is increased by the variation because it's fun and different. The '96 guys probably don't care because they're adults, and the honor comes from being recognized, not because of the uniforms. If they do care, they should grow up. And we know they probably don't care, because Kalani was teammates with tons of those guys, and there are members of that team in the athletic department. If it was that important, don't you think they would've stepped in while those decisions were being made? The current players should be the ones who choose, and they are. The decision certainly shouldn't be made
And don't even get me started on the NFL's stupid brand decisions. In case you haven't noticed, they've started to be a lot looser with uniform requirements and throwbacks, because someone finally got some sense knocked into them.
