I never wanted him benched
I got frustrated during the SMU game, but he temporarily redeemed himself in my eyes at the end of that game. Then I was frustrated last game over and over, saying "Why doesn't he ever ever ever throw the ball out of bounds." But I'm still not calling for him to be benched. He clearly has amazing talent. Also, he clearly is very inconsistent. And finally, he has a lot of recklessness and short-sightedness in him. However, altogether, I ask myself- who will be QB next year? I hope it's Jake Retzlaff and I hope he gets better throughout this year. As things stand, I doubt Gerry Bohanon would be much better. Perhaps 1 more win, maybe? But those that attended the practices never said that Gerry was performing better than Jake. So, you're jumping the horse mid-stream and that can be messy anyway...and to a horse that hasn't proven any better, and from a horse that got you to 3-0 in his first real prepped starts. I think we're looking at a 7 win season with Jake. I don't feel confident Gerry would do better.
Having said that, if Jake shows a propensity for turnovers going forward, and if it costs us winnable games, then I wouldn't mind seeing Bohannon taking over or taking partly over. I'm not talking about a single intererception in a game. Maybe not even 2 turnovers. But yes, 3 turnovers in a game (like SMU) was bad. But 1 bad game doesn't equal benching for me. And apparently not for the coaching staff either. He's not Jaren Hall, who protected the ball well. But he's not Jaren Hall in a good way and can throw over the middle like Hall couldn't. In other words, he's his own guy. Detmer is a good comparison. Not a perfect comparison, but Detmer was very turnover prone. But he could also put the ball in the endzone frequently. I can live with some turnovers if we can get points on the board. I would say that I'm a little impressed so far with Jake Retzlaff's talent. But I'll be really impressed if he can refine his game a little more.
