Rules says forcible contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless player

1. Defender smacked the side of Retzlaffs helmet - clearly is head area. Wasn’t face mask to face mask. If it were, isn’t that still the head area? In my mind it was forcible contact to the head or neck area.

2. Is he defenseless? Rule says a player is defenseless when throwing the ball or just after throwing. Does that apply to a backward pass? Not sure.

I think the refs have called targeting on less violent hits. And they seem to call it in any contact to the head or neck area.

Regardless, they didn’t call it. Miles got the first down. Was a beautiful play design, call and execution.
