I think its fine and that your objections probably stem from other things
If BYU did this I don't think you'd take issue with it. I wouldn't.
But I'll admit I haven't been there at a Utah game when they do this so I don't have a ton of perspective about how it comes off. I don't think you're a jerk for feeling like you do. But I do suspect that your views may be colored by your fandom. I know mine often are.
