With USB network adapters, the USB device has all the networking hardware contained within itself. The USB protocols allow the laptop to communicate with and through it the same way as if it was integrated directly into the motherboard or if it was an add on card.
On a MacBook or similar laptop without a physical NIC port, they rely on WiFi for networking if a USB device isn’t being used.
