Covey started every game Detmer's freshman season even though Ty was performing
...better than Covey. Even the bowl game that year Covey started an Detmer came in and won the game over (next season national champ) Colorado in the Freedom Bowl
Lavell reluctantly gave Detmer the start over Covey in the first game of Ty's sophomore season.
Detmer over Covey is not a good example of benching a starter
