SMU's biggest weakness last season was rushing yards allowed, in all three P4
games they gave up over 200 yards rushing in all three. They brought in 5 DTs and 4 DEs from the transfer portal, all from P4 schools. They also brought in 4 O-linemen from P4 schools to find replacements for their two o-linemen that left. I think the FPI for SMU might reflect this.

I'm not saying SMU deserves #25 or that BYU can't beat them but I would bet they are better than last season, just the fact that they are bringing back like 17 starters plus improved their biggest weakness. I believe SMU's cornerbacks will be their biggest weakness this season, both starters were backups last season. IMO SMU will be a valid test to see where BYU will stand in the B12 Conference.
