and one for medals. The latter would give huge jumps for winning team events, making them more valuable wins than individual events.

It doesn't matter at all for any purpose, but my curiosity would like to see both counts displayed. Doesn't seem to be any reason they can't do this. I assume the team sizes are fixed and known anyway.

It's rather silly that you can have 80 shooting or swimming medals with 8 athletes on your team, but there's only one basketball medal with 12 dudes on your team.
