Japan Coug Intervention Needed
It’s true that Bielsa is known for this, but Uruguay was known for it long
before Bielsa entered the scene (and probably before he was even born).

The phrase “garra charrúa” has been around to describe the Uruguayan style of play since at least the late ‘70s or early ‘80s, when I first started watching soccer in that part of the world. I think it dates back to the 1920s or ‘30s, when Uruguay was a dominant soccer power.
