I think Pope will be the first to admit his recruiting that offseason was not managed well. Given the changing landscape & BYU's sluggish financial response, he was in a very difficult place.
BYU's Ath Dept simply was not ready to recruit like Pope wanted to recruit.
It's really silly not to recognize how right Mark Pope was for our transition into the Big12. Even if its lasting effect was more about turning our Ath Dept on to the real challenges that lay ahead — if indeed competitive excellence were something they were interested in achieving in a major conference.
