Star Wars was a massive hit in large part due to the quantum leap in special effects. The writing and such was good, not great.

But Lucas changed movie technology forever with Star Wars and ILM.

Today, superior SFX are commonplace so the movie would lose its primary differentiation.

As others said, Force Awakens is A New Hope. The differences are minimal.

People liked it but most its excitement was built in by the brand.

That movie isn’t a good indication of how Star Wars would do today without the history.
