He had some stories! Memorable to me as a teenager:

Him bringing a dachshund home from Germany in his duffle bag

Him having to drink wine (provided by grateful French people) since the retreating Germans contaminated wells with dead bodies as they were pushed back across Europe. I remember he brought a bottle home he saved to celebrate something like the one-year anniversary of the end of the war. When he popped the cork, it sprayed all over the place and there was virtually none left to drink. He said he took it as a sign God wanted him to go back to not drinking wine.

Interesting guy! I enjoyed staying in his cabin--a fairly remote place he kept in anticipation of war on American soil. I can still hear him saying "get it in you!" as he fed us seconds and thirds at every meal.
