I wonder if some of the great titles out of the 80s and 90s were because an original idea had a much better chance at success because once greenlit it was guaranteed to only compete against a few other films during its run in theaters.
Now a film has to compete against a few others, plus dozens of other things on major streaming platforms of similar quality, plus all the user generated stuff like TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Twitch, etc.
Hearing streaming executives talk about how they're fighting for viewers' hours is fascinating because of how fierce the competition is and it's so different from the 1980s and 1990s or even the 2000s.
