Exactly true. My son plays ball. There are guys who he knows who had phenomenal averages in HS, but can't make the jump to college. Why? Because they have weaknesses that haven't been exposed.
For example, on his team alone:
Player 1: Hit .400+, but pulls everything to LF. Mentally fragile and a low baseball IQ.
Player 2: Can't hit anything above 85mph. Not a problem in HS, but he's In trouble at the next level.
Player 3: Has great bat speed, but really struggles with off speed. College ball will figure this out real quick and he'll be lucky if he ever sees a fast ball again.
These are just a few examples. But all of those weakness are difficult to know unless one has watched them play multiple times. This is why recruiting can be difficult. So coaches turn to their "trusted" sources, which unfortunately limits them from potentially good players that are unknown to those in the trusted circle.
Juco has several of these unknown players, but it's also another level of play that can also hide weaknesses. Hard to know.
