A few thoughts: most NBA offenses focus on creating open shots or a numbers advantage moving towards the rim. As the
game has evolved we have learned that outside of an uncontested layup 1.20 points per shot, the corner 3 is our best bang for the buck at 1.16 PPS followed by any other 3. Meaning you are trying to create a break to the rim or an open look from 3 as your most efficient and best way to score. Midrange and paint attempts are far below the others at .79PPS. Nobody game plans to shoot midrange jumpers. It just so happens that some players in the NCAA and most NBA superstars are really good shooters and the midrange shot is one the get often. And it is usually contested. Those shots we watch Booker, and KD, Edwards take and make are not the shots you want to see as a coach. Those are not what is drawn up. It's what the stars take and make a lot on their own though. When one of those stars has an off shooting night it is hard to win if they keep taking those shots.

All of that being said, Creating open looks is the name of the game. If the are moving towards the rim after a pick and roll thats great. If the are open 3s, thats great too. Those are the shots you are looking for.
