I didn’t mean it as an insult; I like Detroit, it gets a bad rap. But Torino is
the center of Italy’s auto industry, like Detroit is for the US. It’s an important hub of heavy industry that carries a lot of weight in the Italian economy, especially in the manufacturing sector, just like Detroit in the US. And like Detroit, it’s in its country’s “rust belt” and gets a bad rap, being viewed by many as a less desirable place to live and visit.
For these reasons, Torino is known as the Detroit of Italy. Or an Italian might say that Detroit is the Torino of the US.
