Most people go there not understanding that for most of the last 600 years
Athens was a provincial Ottoman / Turkish outpost. Everyone thinks of the glory of ancient Greece, they don't think of the incompetence, petty corruption, and backwardness of the late Ottoman empire, and that's what shaped Athens for longer than the US has even existed.
