ours had a gas "volume" dial to make the flame bigger or smaller. I guess I was supposed to barely turn it it and then apply the match. I turned it way more than appropriate and in the time I took to get a match to the flame the gas had accumulated and did a big flare up. I'm sure it was not to dangerous levels yet, but it sure scared me.
