A few years ago I saw a piece about the turf at Denver’s Mile High stadium. A ton of engineering goes into the turf
Some parts I remember:

- the turf system is about 2’ deep with different layers and materials to aid with root growth, heating, irrigation, and drainage
- they have 2 huge boilers that pump hot water through miles of pipes under the turf 24/7 starting in October to keep the roots warm enough to prevent the grass from going dormant
- they have an active drainage system that uses pumps to suck water away from the turf when it rains
- they used some exotic genetically engineered grass seed made specifically for athletic fields instead of plastic mesh or other similar things because then they can easily replace/repair sections that get damaged
