Every band originating in that era started off wanting to be the Sex Pistols.
Most moved beyond punk shortly after. None of u2’s studio albums are punk and, in my opinion, were post punk. War was very political as were punk bands like the Clash at the time, but it is a post punk album.

IMO, the Cure (Boys Don’t Cry) and Joy Division (No Love Lost) had a lot more of a punk sound in their very early stuff than U2, and those bands became post punk archetypes by 1980.
