Omaha's terrain was particularly deadly. Some of the other beaches were flat plains with gradual rises. Omaha has the bluff that raises right up off the beach for several hundred feet. Brutal to have to storm ashore when the enemy has a distinct high ground like that.

I've also read they tried to do this, but from high altitude with B17's. Clouds made this more inaccurate.
