Having the battery on the bottom of the car and evenly distributed weight probably did save them...
pure luck, but had they hit nose, tail, or upside down it would have been much less likely for them to survive.

Another explanation is that the vehicle ran out of electricity part of the way down, greatly slowing the fall.
