Outside Utah a player that is active has a connection to what BYU uniquely offers. inactive likely makes them just like any other nonmember kid who would go anywhere. Activity even mildly, gives BYU a natural leg up for a kid in a minority LDS state all else being equal. And if we are trying to bring in the best recruits with most efficient use of resources Active LDS top prospects across the country would provide the most bang for the buck and hit rate. Steve Young (Connecticut) , Luke Staley (Oregon), Jake Heaps (Washington) (5 star and although didn’t pan out but we need more top shelf players) different eras but came to byu because of active LDS connection. Obviously list could be in hundreds more who came from outside Utah and had great success over the years. Point is, we need more and we’re missing them sometimes because they aren’t known Active LDS which is our primary competitive advantage.
