Couple points
1. There are two groups often called "critics."

The first are actually fanboys/girls who run movie enthusiast websites, wear marvel t-shirts, and try to get their names in advertisements. They aren't really critics, but more part of the movie industry's economic engine. Their thoughts are basically worthless, but they annoyingly often get lumped in with the real critics.

The second are the real critics, who are versed in history and technique, aren't paid by studios, understand movies better than the rest of us, and have intelligent things to say about them, including what they are saying, why, and how.

This guy is one of the latter.

2. James Cameron is probably the greatest sequel maker in history and arguably the greatest action director in history. The guy spent over a decade working on this and the technology required to make it happen, and we know he's doing things other people aren't — the in-water shooting, the switching FPS between scenes, etc.

If a legit critic with a proven track record says this James Cameron sequel a decade in the making is a hyperbolic movie experience, I'm inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Especially because he specifically described the first as Pocahontas fan fiction and says this isn't Citizen Kane, but is a trope-y movie told with cool unprecedented tech. He's not saying it's the single greatest movie ever made or anything like that.
