There are definitely people making this argument with respect to transgender kid

kids. That we should respond to trans kids in a way that - while maybe harsh in the short term - is beneficial in the long term. This could lead to some bad short term results, but overall better long term results.

I'm not saying those people are correct. Just sounds similar to the point you're raising.
