All reasons why it's really hard to make an apples to apples comparison on
housing costs over time. Location, size, features, build quality, technology all change.
It's like comparing pickup trucks between today and 50 years ago. They are way more expensive today, but they also do a lot more. If you had a truck in the 1970s with 450 horsepower, 11,000lb towing capacity, adaptive cruise, heated and cooled leather seats, etc., it would have been much more expensive.

So the comparison would be that houses are about 4.8x income now vs only 2.9x in 1973. Seems relavant.
