Do it...
I took piano lessons for a couple years. However, I quit when I started learning saxophone at school (6th grade). Later I had a band class in jr. high and kinda learned to play the coronet. I sucked and it was clear that I didn't possess any music DNA. Shop class beaconed the next year...so much for music education.

Fast forward.....four years ago after being laid off and essentially retiring, I decided (always wishing I had stuck with the piano) that I would commit to learning it. I started trying to learn by myself, but floundered for months, eventually signing up with an adult piano teacher. She told me what lesson and technique books to buy. For 3 years, every week, she lorded over me and held me accountable for practicing, instructing and correcting me. She helped me learn basic theory and HOW to practice. My confidence finally kicked in and decided I could solo, and for the past year I've been doing it on my own at my own pace.

Seriously, this is the hardest, most disciplined activity I've ever done. Learning syncopation with both hands has been brutal and discouraging. I practice 5-6 days a week, sometimes twice a day, 60-90 minutes in the morning and perhaps 30-45 minutes 2-3 evenings every week, though my practicing doesn't always feel productive. I even take a portable keyboard with me on vacations. I'm motivated even more now since it seems to be sinking in, though it's confirmed that I don't have music DNA...none of it comes naturally....I practice stuff over and over and over and memorized each piece I learn before moving on.

I chat my teacher once every few months...she wants to know how I'm doing. My progress is satisfying (even though I feel I suck at it) but I figure in 5-6 more years I'll actually be able to "play" the piano, not just "play on" the piano. The key has been commitment and disciplined practicing (even when I don't feel like it....and while dealing with some serious illness and a low back injury over the past year. I now applaud anyone, anywhere who can play any instrument at any level.

If you send me a board mail, I'll detail the books and other resources I've been using.
