Physiologically humans are crummy hunters
We've only been successful at acquiring protein sources by using advanced mental acuity. Using the gun is a great example of that. Other good examples are domesticating animals for their use. Without a weapon and without domesticating them we would have to resort to things like running them off cliffs. I'd rather stick to guns personally. Lots of waste when they splatter at the bottom of a cliff.
