part of the issue has been that the 2012-15 classes weren't carrying their weight as upperclassmen, so the coaches have replaced them with younger players with potential even though not all are ready. There was a lot of attrition in those classes.
Kalani's recruiting strength is finding talented under-recruited players. The roster is littered with above average to good players. The team needs more difference makers with star potential. That's where things could improve by getting more 4 star Chaz Ah You's. Most of those big time recruits as DEs and RBs and WRs are hard to come by.
