I don't think it's unreasonable to think he can start playing better.

There are a lot of road games in there, but the only two teams that they match up poorly against are Edmonton and Colorado. There are a lot of games against Pacific teams, meaning they can make up points in the standings, and they are 11-5-2 against the Pacific this year.
The really dangerous stretch is coming up next. They have four more on the road coming out of the break (making it a total of eight straight) and they include Carolina, Tampa and Florida. Then they come home and host the Blues, Islanders, Capitals, Panthers and Lightning.
If they can survive this stretch and get to March when they mostly play Pacific teams, they will make the playoffs.
