Yes, for scheduling purposes because, at the time, there was enough inventory
to accommodate those conferences that mandated that their members play against at least one non-conference game against a power conference team.

Since then, ADs and coaches have expressed a desire to play against more peer (power conference schhols) teams. Saban advocates that P5s should only play members of power conferences. He finally has an AD that thinks like he does. In an 18- month span, the AD has signed H/H series with Notre Dame, Texas, OU, WVU, and Wisconsin.

Harlan, the new Utah AD, believes in scheduling tougher competition. He is on record as saying that while he likes the rivalry game, he will do what is best for Utah. A week later, he announced the H/H with Arkansas. Not an SEC powerhouse but SEC member nonetheless. Look for him to start scheduling at least one power conference team, every year.

Two months ago, Scott said that he encouraged the PAC 12 teams to play at a 10 P5 (not P5 equivalent) schedules. As more P5 teams adopt that philosophy, the inventory of available P5 opponents will increase and the conferences will rely less on Army, BYU, Cincy, and UConn to fulfill their requirements.
