IMO, industry transitions have caused columnists to seek clickbait over quality.
As Exhibit A, I give you GoMo.

I'll bet he doesn't actually believe the opinion he contrives for half of the articles he writes anymore — it's merely to get more clicks for the website and more listeners for the radio show, especially where the Trib is failing financially.

Older guys like Rock, GoMo, and PK all became celebrities in Utah in the 90's when newspaper subscriptions were still at their peak and sports columnists were showcased on local sports TV all over the place (Talkin' Sports, Sportsbeat, etc.) every weekend. Since anyone who is embedded as a columnist has a diminishing profile in general in the media due to the iphone/social media revolution of the past 15-20 years, and those that aren't embedded will never reach the same profile status as the GoMos of the 90's, columnists in general have been overreaching for years. I take anything any of these guys write with a grain of salt in the current context of things.

Diminished profile and believability in general has diluted the news column industry — especially the sports column industry — and quality of writing overall and it's sad.

GO COUGS.
